Mongol Rally Rolling News Week 4

The rolling news never stops. Except when we don't do it.

We soft-bottomed souls like to leave the office on a Friday and spend the weekend bathing in our farts and avoiding our families. Pretty much the same as our ralliers then.

We are back to kick off Week 4.  The finish line is open in Ulan-Ude. Eight teams have made it and double that have dropped out.

This is the week that will change.

17.25 14.08.2015 Rosa Earp

And that's our week folks. The gin is out and so are we.

We'll be back on Monday with Week 5 but the teams are still battling through. If you can't wait, there is always our tracker.

More fatal breakdowns from the front line:

RIP Betty - she blew up in Mongolia one day from the finish line. In the market for three camels and a box of matches. Our options now are to torch the car, the paperwork or the border...
— Dropbears

Better luck next time boys.

Hangover in Mongolia. In Mongolia.

Mongolia. The Mongol in the Mongol Rally. Totally worth it.

The first of the Pamir highway shots are starting to trickle in. Here's Tuk Tales 2 at their campsite - they tell us those hills are Afghanistan.

Just to whet your appetite, this is what they are driving towards:

Nothing like a good crash to liven up the newsfeed. Marco Yolo have declared "Game Over" in Kazakhstan.

Hit a rock on one of the better roads we’ve encountered in the past few days. The swerve took us off the road and the bank did the job of somersaulting the car.
— Marco Yolo

That is a proper smash. Everyone escaped "relatively unscathed" except Marco Yolo's Rally which has been abruptly stunted. Glad you're ok. We'll be here next year.

Sometimes. When you drive hard enough. With enough torque. In the right vehicle. It is possible. To set fire to a mountain...

Wanted to camp by a lake, but the strong winds and sand forced us to the side of a cafe where much vodka was shared with fishermen. A few hours later mike lost his first arm wrestling match since 8th grade.
— Team Anserimates

We understand the gentleman in question is Canadian. What's the betting he apologised to his opponent after losing?

13.08 13.08.2015 Rosa Earp

We have broken down in Aktau Kazakhstan and it is looking bad. Not sure whether the wonder wagon will survive this disaster.
— Aaron - Adventure for Dementia

Not looking too good.

This ominous update came through in the magic hour we call gin o'clock yesterday when we lazy buggers are away from our computer screens. It must have been the gin that saved them, because even as we bring you the bad news we can add that their Ligier has indeed survived and is back on the road.

The problem? That's old news now. Glad you're still with us boys.

Some teams have a harder time than others. Team Kukaramakara fit right in and seem remarkably relaxed in the middle of the Mongolia.

Working hard or hardly working eh boys?

11.10 11.08.2015 Rosa Earp

Team Nomad No Cry have hit some pretty serious mechanical troubles in the Wakhan Valley.

Our little Renault Kangoo had 198,000km on the clock when we bought it, with a fully functioning suspension. It doesn’t any more.
— Nomad No Cry

Only a week ago, these guys were spearheading the drive through the 'stans.  Hope you can fix up and get to the end.

14.04 10.08.2015 Rosa Earp

It’s like we’re in a brick-filled tumble dryer. But it’s beautiful.
— Team Vast Curious

It's not exactly been a smooth journey so far but they are almost at Ulan Ude

The four kiwi lads from Don't Worry I know a Shortcut have found an on-the-road solution to losing their radiator cap:

Lost our expansion bottle cap on the Transfăgărășan Highway. We’re using a condom instead.
— Team Don't Worry I know a Shortcut

Clearly the way to go because they have made it to Samarkand.

It was 'the only thing that fit' apparently across the 2.5inch opening. Someone's got a lucky other half.

The tracking map is looking pretty damn sweet. Click on the image to get stuck into the live feed from the teams.

Anyone driving from Astana to Pavlodar, if you find our bumper could you grab it?

It says ‘Don’t be Russian us’ on it.
— Michael -Team DAM Ozzies

So somewhere in that 638km is one car bumper. Should be a doddle.

Classic drain action from team are we nearly there yet.

The further east they go, the skies get bluer, the roads get rougher and the photos get better.

11.27 11.08.2015 Rosa Earp

The Sundance Kids are chomping at the bit:

Guess what?! We’re still in Baku. Of course. ‘It’s too windy’ they say, ‘the ship has techincial issues’ they say. ‘Damn you’ we say!
— The Sundance Kids

Just to whet your appetite, this is what awaits you:

The ferry was horrible. We were stuck on there for three days.

After the first two hours the ferry ran out of beer, after three hours they ran out of food, after four hours they ran out of water.
— Corsa Can

07.55 11.08.2015 Rosa Earp

The past three weeks have been kids stuff compared to the last one day in Mongolia. Two flats, pitch black river drives, sump guard ripped from the car... and we are only 500k in.
— Super Villains Deluxe

There is a reason Mongolia is called the great leveller.

2CV Rally have got a cracking car and excellent rally style.

We heard a voice through our walkie talkie: “Mongol Rally teams, head for the light.”
— Lost Terriers

Timely directions or misinformation with a dastardly intent?

The 'road' to the 40ft crater of fire is surrounded by treacherous sand dunes and more than one team has come a cropper:

We used the only known countermeasure to an angry border guard with an AK47: a stupid smile and a blank stare, combined with wearing a cheap Uzbek hat.

The man gave up and let us in.
— Team Red Adder

Ah yes, the stupid smile and blank stare in the face of unintelligible obstinacy.

A classic made famous by wait-staff dealing with Americans since the invention of exclusion diets.

14.24 10.08.2015 Rosa Earp

Marco Yolo have lost their roof rack to the Turkmen roads.

Not for the first time, Rally Veterans have chimed in with their unasked-for advice. This time, its from team The Gingerbread Men who turned mishap to glory in 2014:

10.46 06.08.2015 Rosa Earp

Team 'Don't worry, I know a Shortcut' have risked life and limb going near a camels arse to get this completely fucking pointless picture.

22.55 09.08.2015 Rosa Earp

Someone calling themselves 'La Doushe' hit a little trouble in Turkmenistan:

Had no money to pay fine so they deported me but were really nice about it.
— La Doushe

Well as long as they were nice eh? That makes up for forcibly expelling you from their country.
