The World's Fastest Mobility Scooter

Yes, you read that right. To contrast with the overall theme of 'Slow' at the Festival of Slow UK, eccentric English inventor Colin Furze graced us with his splendid presence... oh, and he brought along his world record holdingly fast mobility scooter too. Take a look at the 70mph scootering beast in action below.

Mr. Furze did infact decide to bring two of these tarmac tearing beasts, what to do with two? Race. Colin describes the specs of the scooter: "Powered by a 125cc motocross bike 2-stroke engine, its got 5 gears and around 35bhp and although my world record is 71mph, its max speed is 82.5mph. Yes, you have read that correctly."

Team Shoebaru - Mongol Rally Veterans to South Africa

Mongol Rally veteran Joe Pyrek (‘The Rolling Cones’ - 2009) has banded together a motley crew of six to head not east like all the other Ralliers today but south, south... and a little further south. Joe and his team-mates Scott Brills, Scott Campbell, Mallory Brown, Ann Lowson & Emily Olson are taking two Subaru Foresters, dressed to look like a pair of Converse Chuck Taylors, from the Festival of Slow here at Goodwood, UK to Goodhope, South Africa.

They are raising money for Awassa Children's Project, a small charity which runs an orphanage in Ethiopia primarily for children whose parents have aids. They'll be visiting Awassa and the orphanage and spending a few days there en-route.

“It’s about getting out there and doing something in a ridiculous way," Joe explained to rapt Ralliers-to-be, "having fun and making a huge difference - like on the Mongol Rally. We could have gone in a Landrover or a Landcruiser, but who would care? This approach means we’ll meet more people and have a completely different, more enriching experience. We have about 15,000 miles between the start and the finish line and a lot could happen. A lot will happen.”

Team Shoebaru presented the prize for Least Likely to Make it to Mongolia which was awarded to team Five Crew Canoe. The two teams then engaged in a race, a wheel changing race.

Lining Up

The teams are now all being asked to head back to their cars, jump start their engines and line up on the track for the start of the Mongol Rally 2012. One team has already managed to lose their not-so-trusty steed... keep on looking chaps, it won't have gone far.
