Calling Rally Veterans

Are you haunted by a feeling you were meant to do something? A bit like when you think you’ve left the oven on? Do you find yourself unable to sleep at night because you feel ‘incomplete’? Is there a gaping hole inside of you, getting bigger, becoming harder to ignore? Do you try to fill that hole with meaningless trivialities? Have you moved job, got a bigger car, found a nicer flat only to find your life is still lacking? What is this void within you? Why do you feel inadequate, unfulfilled?

We might have the answer. Cast your mind back one, maybe two summers ago, to when you were on the cusp of heroism only to be thwarted by mechanical ineptitude, the wheels of bureaucracy or perhaps the sands of time? Such adversity in the face of triumph is enough to knock the wind out of any man’s sails, little wonder you’ve repressed the determination to reach that goal, better to pretend success means nothing than to be constantly reminded of your failure, better to say you will go back to it one day, than to begin to climb that mountain from the bottom once more.

Surely it’s a brave thing to do to give up? To throw in the the towel and say “I can live with the scorn of my peers, with my family and friends knowing I’m a failure”. Living every day with the knowledge that you could’ve done better, should’ve made it to Ulaanbaatar. Certainly it’s a lot to face up to. Not being able to look in the mirror let alone another map of Central Asia

Don’t you want to feel that triumphant glow inside? don’t you want to be the one in the pub bragging about how you got ‘that scar’? Don’t you want to have your friends thinking of you as the brave adventurous one again?

But why tell people you will do it some day. What’s wrong with today? Jump back in the saddle while you can use the pain of disappointment to stoke the fire of determination.
