ASEAN Rickshaw Run Pioneers Edition - build up to launch...

by Dan on: 15 Oct 2011

Adventure No. 7 launches from Jakarta tomorrow, the brand new ASEAN Rickshaw Run. There are 30 pioneering teams from all over this fine planet taking a three-wheeled plunge into the adventurey unknown.

The latest addition to The Adventurists' gaggle of boredom fighting jaunts has received incredible support from ASEAN - the Association of South East Asian Nations - and a host of people in Indonesia including the fine folks who are in charge of Jakarta. The teams arrived on Thursday and got stuck into test driving. Today they are playing the traditional sports day match against a local team made up of ASEAN staff and officials at a venue provided by the Jakarta Police.

A grand launch is planned for tomorrow morning from the most prestigious of locations - the ASEAN Secreatariat in Jakarta - and then the teams are on the road, and expecting to take around two weeks to reach the finish line in Bangkok. As with the original Rickshaw Run, the teams are entirely on their own, there is no back up, no support and no set route.

The first set of photos are in from Day 1 of test driving, thanks to Anto Cornelius from The XCats for providing the photos.

Sometimes at test driving events when teams meet their machines there is a brief yet intense sensation of mild panic at the task that lies ahead, mixed together like a strong cocktail with the realisation that the vehicle really isn't designed for mountains and jungles. The October 2011 edition of the ASEAN Rickshaw Run is the Pioneer edition, this adventure has never happened before so the vehicles have arrived brand spanking new for the first batch of teams to take on the jaunt from Jakarta to Bangkok

The auto-rickshaws on this Pioneers edition are brand spanking new. Here a chap who knows about wires is doing some stuff to wires. The horn will certainly need to work. Image: Anto Cornelius - The XCats

The team is from Oxford University, one of the finest academic institutions on this planet. Here they are preparing their auto-rickshaw at test driving ahead of the launch with their charity stickers already in place.
