The April '15 Rickshaw Run launches on April 6th. Running from the Rajasthan desert North West India to Hilly Shillong in the far East the teams will encounter desert, mountain and jungle in their 2,700km odyssey across the subcontinent.
We've had a sift through the social media underworld looking for teams to watch and are happy to report there are some fucking weirdos out there; from the engaged couple using the Rickshaw Run as a simulation for married life, to the team who don't know each other, to the team who don't know their left from right (let alone how to read a map). Here are our favourites:
Teen Romanchak Yaar
Travel bloggers Derek & Ryan team up with local adventure traveller Rutavi to put together a travel-writing juggernaut. They will be be blogging the shit out of their trip, so if you are looking for someone live-tweeting a does of Dehli-belly or a Vine of a collision with a cow, these are your guys. At least we're hoping they'll be doing, rather than instagramming their breakfast and giving a running commentary on Wi-Fi coverage of northern India
...left the USA in 2009 to travel the world. Eventually he realized that he couldn't stop. Turns out travel is more addictive than heroin. The only medicine that eases his pain? A new plane ticket prescribed weekly -- and regular shots of adrenaline. Since Derek doesn't like needles he has to get his adrenaline rushes in real life.
...is on an odyssey of oddities not to find himself, but to create himself, and to explore the diverse countries around the world with an open mind and naked eyes. Thanks to a severe disdain for the mundane he quit his job and now wanders the globe, thriving on unpredictability and adventure.
...is Indian adventure traveler who has tackled most everything the country can throw at adrenaline junkies -- except for something as wildly unpredictable as the Rickshaw Run. Despite her calm and collected exterior, inside she is secretly scared shitless that these two boys won't be able to stick to the route and time frame she came up with.
Team Opihr - Gin-dian Dream
Ollie is on a run of luck after winning a place on the Rickshaw Run through a promotion on a bottle of Opihr Gin.
We're pretty sure the luck will run out in monumental form half way across India and the Opihr blog is the place to watch Ollie and partner Sarah's Indian Dream unravel.
At least they'll enjoy an Opihr sundowner as they reflect on the day's misadventures.
Ollie and Sarah are raising funds for The Jigsaw Trust who support families affected by autism. Their fundraising page is:
Sarah and Matt from Australia got engaged last year but thought it prudent to test their relationship before tying the knot. What better trial for a young romance than the Rickshaw Run? Okay, maybe a life-threatening illness, but that's not as much fun to blog about.
Sarah and Matt will be using the Rickshaw Run to raise funds for schools and homes for children in India and Nepal. After the run they will be going the donate the gifts, help with building projects and teach the kids. If you want to donate you can head over to their donations page, which perhaps in reference to the impending matrimonials, is in the form of a 'wedding gift list':
Hailing from the icy wastelands of Minnesota, Nancy and Jess barely knew each other before they decided to sign up for the Rickshaw Run. Deciding this shouldn't be a barrier to adventure they've barely spoken since.
Nancy and Jess both profess to a love of 'crazy' adventure, so we're taking bets as to which of the girls will awake to find the other staring over them with a sinister grin, a handful of entrails and a carving knife. We've seen Fargo. We know folks from those parts are nuttier than fruit-bat shit.
What Anna and Jason lack in practical skills they make up for in spirit. Which let's be honest is way more fun. They probably won't actually make it, but at least they'll have fun.
Anna (Team Captain and general control freak)
29 year old, trainee assistant practitioner (don’t worry no one knows what that is) and organiser. Festival goer, water baby, give anything a goer and a bit over the top. Lover of music, lists, dancing, travelling and being a bit on the artistic side. Team photographer, blogger and general dog’s body. Hater of sunburn, gravy and Delhi belly. Special powers: believes she has a connection with her dog, so a crazy dog lady. One degree in media production and undertaking another in health and social care through work (hence the trainee part).
Years driving: 2 (and a bit)
Specialist training for the trip: looked at an engine, got distracted, started thinking about pancakes.
Jason (the relaxed one)
28 year old deputy manager of a learning disability unit, nurse and an all-round good guy. Partyer, silent disco lover, festival mad idiot abroad. Lover of drinking, dancing, India and finding the funny side. Team fundraiser, manager and linguist (that’s if people can understand his northern accent). Hater of cats, cuddles and crying. Special powers: can recite the Cadburys crème egg barcode off by heart. Have all the skills of a nurse without being patronising.
Years driving: 11 years
Specialist training for the trip: a degree in Challenging behaviour (to help manage team mate)
Some other teams to watch:
Talk to Frank (n Furter)
Not much to know about this two rick team, except Scott has already got his rickshaw Run scars in the shape of the tattoo (right). Sterling work sir.
Smiles and Miles
These hardcore adventurers have already toured the world on a Ural sidecar motorcycle so are already considering the Ice Run after they finish in India.
The Namaskar Initiative
French team who will be blogging and filming their Rickshaw Run
